Launch of Report on Iraq’s Minorities Since the Fall of Mosul

26 February 2015, International Press Center, Brussels

On 27 February 2015, a report entitled “Between the Millstones:  Iraq’s Minorities Since the Fall of Mosul” will be released during an event to be held at the International Press Center in Brussels. The report is a joint publication of the Institute of International Law and Human Rights (IILHR), Minority Rights Group International (MRG), No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO).

The report seeks to highlight how minority communities in Iraq have been targeted by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in a systematic strategy to remove them permanently from large areas of Iraq, and provides critical information on the legal basis for war crimes prosecutions.

The report presents information focused on five main minority groups – Christians, Kaka’i, Shebak, Turkmen and Yezidi – who have been most affected by ISIS advances that have taken place since the fall of Mosul in June, 2014. The report seeks to highlight the sheer scope of ISIS offenses, provide context and details on the status of these groups, focus on the precarious humanitarian situation that faces more than 2 million persons displaced, provides a legal analysis of violations of international humanitarian law, and outline a series of recommendations that can provide remedies and strategies to address the catastrophe that has befallen these peoples.
