UN / Geneva: NPWJ and NRPTT convene Side Event on "Political Solution and Accountability for Syria"

On the occasion of the 30th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, No Peace Without Justice and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT), together with the Euro-Syrian Democratic Forum, are convening a Side Event on "Political Solution and Accountability for Syria", which will be held on 21 September 2015 (from 13h00 to 15h00, Palais des Nations, Room XXIV). The meeting is co-sponsored by the Governments of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Turkey, USA and the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces.
 
Panelists of the meeting, to be co-Chaired by Niccolò Figà-Talamanca, Secretary General No Peace Without Justice and Hussein Sabbagh, Secretary General of Euro-Syrian Democratic Forum, include Hisham Marwah, Vice President of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, Samir Altaqi, Orient Research Centre, Mohammed Nehad Nader, Brigadier-General (rtd.) of the Syrian Army, Raheb Alwany, Human Rights Defender, Stephen Rapp, former Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, former US Ambassador on War Crimes Issues.
 

 
This side event addresses the issues of redress and accountability for violence, abuses and violations of human rights and international humanitarian law as an essential component of UN-led consultations and discussions, and aims to discuss some of the complex questions that this entails. The meeting also serves as a reminder of the urgent priority of reaching a lasting political solution to the Syrian war, through an inclusive and participatory process, capable to ensure redress for all victims, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation, including through accountability processes for crimes under international law that can foster national reconciliation, ensure no repetition and an end to impunity for violations of international humanitarian law.
