Workshop on the economic reform and the private sector in the BMENA Region in the context of the international financial crisis

OPAC and NPWJ organize a workshop on economic reform

Beirut - The Lebanese Organization for Civil Activities (OPAC) and the Italian organization “No Peace Without Justice” (NPWJ), in partnership with the governments of Morocco and Italy, are convening a Workshop on the economic reform and the private sector in the BMENA Region in the context of the international financial crisis, to be held in Beirut, Lebanon, on 26 27 September 2009.

The meeting aims at promoting productive dialogue on a peer-to-peer basis between civil society and governments of the broader Middle East and North Africa (bMENA), G8 and other democratic partners, on issues relating to the economic reform process and its interconnections with political development, democracy and human rights. The Beirut Workshops intended to provide a setting for concrete exchanges between high-level governmental and non-governmental actors from the region aiming at the development of proposals and goals that can be jointly agreed upon by them.

The workshop aims at discussing those issues related to the role of the corporate social responsibility, transparency and private sector in addressing social justice, unemployment and poverty as well as at discussing strategies which could enable broader development in the region. The Beirut Workshop builds upon the guiding principles for stronger dialogue and cooperation between governments and civil society contained in the “Partnership document”, which has been acknowledged by the fifth Forum of the Future held in Abu Dhabi in October 2008.

Participants will include high-level governmental representatives and prominent democracy activists as well as representatives of regional and international Institutions.

The meeting is part of a series of initiatives organized in preparation for the 2009 Forum for the Future, under the Italian and Moroccan co-presidency, in coordination with the Democracy Assistance Dialogue (DAD) partnership. The results of the Workshop will be presented to the Ministerial Meeting of the Forum for the Future 2009, foreseen in Morocco on 2-3 November 2009, to provide a set of constructive proposals and recommendations that could fruitfully feed the discussion between government and civil society.

Roma, 25 set (Velino) - La Lebanese organization for civil activities (Opac) e l’organizzazione italiana “No peace without justice” (Npwj), in collaborazione con i governi del Marocco e dell’Italia, hanno organizzato un workshop sul rapporto tra riforma economica e settore privato nel contesto della crisi finanziaria internazionale, in riferimento ai Paesi del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa. Il convegno si terrà a Beirut, Libano, il 26 e 27 settembre 2009 presso l’hotel Commodore di Beirut, con inizio alle ore 9 di sabato 26. L’incontro mira a promuovere un proficuo dialogo su basi paritarie tra la società civile e i governi del Medio Oriente, del Nord Africa, del G8 e di altri partner democratici riguardo il processo di riforma dell’economia e le sue interconnessioni con lo sviluppo del sistema politico, la democrazia e il rispetto dei diritti umani. Il Workshop a Beirut vuole essere un’occasione di uno scambio concreto tra rappresentanti governativi di alto livello ed esponenti non governativi della regione, al fine di sviluppare proposte ed obiettivi che possano raggiungere un consenso diffuso.

Il workshop si propone inoltre di discutere questi argomenti alla luce del ruolo che la responsabilità sociale delle aziende, la trasparenza e il settore privato possono svolgere nel campo della giustizia sociale, disoccupazione e povertà, oltre a elaborare strategie che possano favorire uno sviluppo regionale più ampio. L’iniziativa segue e sviluppa i principi guida per un dialogo e una collaborazione più stretti fra governi e società civile contenuti nel “Partnership document”, approvato dal quinto Forum del Futuro, tenutosi ad Abu Dhabi nell’ottobre 2008. L’elenco dei partecipanti comprende esponenti governativi di alto livello ed importanti attivisti democratici, oltre a rappresentanti di istituzioni regionali e internazionali. L’incontro rientra in una serie di iniziative preparatorie del Forum per il Futuro 2009, co-presieduto dai governi italiano e marocchino, in collaborazione con l’associazione Democracy assistance dialogue (Dad). Le conclusioni del Workshop saranno presentate in occasione dell’incontro ministeriale del Forum per il Futuro 2009, che si terrà in Marocco il 2 e 3 novembre prossimi, al fine di formulare una serie di proposte e raccomandazioni costruttive, volte ad alimentare un confronto fruttuoso tra governi e società Civile.
