SC denies De Lima petition to attend oral arguments on withdrawal from ICC

The Supreme Court (SC) has denied a petition to let detained Senator Leila de Lima participate in oral arguments on the Philippines' move to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), the court's spokesperson said Tuesday. Voting 10-2, the SC junked the petition filed by the minority Senate bloc to let De Lima argue for the position of non-withdrawal from the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court, where a case against President Rodrigo Duterte is pending for alleged human rights violations on the conduct of his violent anti-drug campaign.

Ivory Coast's former first lady, Simone Gbagbo, who is serving a 20-year jail term, will be freed on Wednesday after President Alassan Ouattara granted her an amnesty, her lawyer said on Tuesday. The wife of former president Laurent Gbagbo has spent seven years behind bars for her role in a wave of political violence that claimed several thousand lives in 2010-11.


Kenya makes appeal to UN on immunity for heads of state

Kenya is calling for the United Nations’ judicial body to issue an opinion on whether national leaders are entitled to immunity in international legal proceedings. The request came in a recent letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from Kenyan UN Ambassador Lazarus Ombai Amayo, who was acting on behalf of the African group of UN member-states.
