Facebook owner Meta’s dangerous algorithms and reckless pursuit of profit substantially contributed to the atrocities perpetrated by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya people in 2017, Amnesty International said in a new report published today. The Social Atrocity: Meta and the right to remedy for the Rohingya,details how Meta knew or should have known that Facebook’s algorithmic systems were supercharging the spread of harmful anti-Rohingya content in Myanmar, but the company still failed to act.
Liberia: US War Crimes Ambassador’s Visit

The United States government should stand with victims of civil wars-era crimes in Liberia by signaling its support for a war crimes court to deliver justice and to foster durable peace and stability in the country, eight Liberian and international organizations said today. US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack is scheduled to visit Liberia on October 6, 2022.

I have just completed my mission to Guinea, during which I took part in an important day, a day in which we saw an example of complementarity in action. Exactly 13 years after the events of 28 September 2009 at the national stadium in Conakry, a trial commenced under Guinean law in which 11 accused have been charged for their alleged crimes. The events at Conakry stadium marked a dark moment for Guinea, with the alleged killing or disappearance of between 156 -200 people and the rape or infliction of sexual violence against 109 women.

On 26 September 2022, the trial in the case The Prosecutor v. Mahamat Said Abdel Kani opened before Trial Chamber VI of the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “the Court”), composed of Judge Miatta Maria Samba (Presiding judge), Judge Socorro Flores Liera and Judge Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godínez. As a former alleged Seleka commander, Mr Said is accused of crimes against humanity (imprisonment or other severe deprivation of liberty; torture; persecution; enforced disappearance and other inhumane acts) and war crimes (torture and cruel treatment) allegedly committed in Bangui (CAR) in 2013.
ICC Prosecutor and Eurojust launch practical guidelines for documenting and preserving information on international crimes

Eurojust and the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have today published practical guidelines for civil society organisations on documenting core international crimes, such as war crimes and crimes against humanity. This will empower as well as support civil society organisations that seek to collect and preserve information to contribute to investigations and prosecutions at the national level or before the ICC. The guidelines aim to assist in fighting impunity and have been drawn up building on the expertise of the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC, Eurojust, the Genocide Network, civil society organisations, national prosecutors and international partners.
