No Peace Without Justice and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty mourn with great sadness the passing of Professor Antonio Cassese, first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Chairperson of the International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur that laid the groundwork for the UN Security Council referral of Sudan to the International Criminal Court, and first President of the International Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
Professor Cassese’s brilliant intelligence, his wit, and most of all his commitment to justice have been an inspiration to a generation of human rights activists, leading the transformation of human rights from theoretical principles limited to the realm of advocacy to internationally justiciable rights.
Human Rights and International criminal justice has lost a true friend and advocate. We mourn Professor Cassese’s passing and urge all who knew him and whose lives he touched to carry on his legacy.
