The meeting, which was hosted by Niccolo’ Figa’-Talamanca, NPWJ Secretary-General, in NPWJ Brussels office, saw the participation of the Open Society Institute, the International Lesbian and Gay Association, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation, the Human Rights Watch, the International Alliance for Justice and the Release Political Prisoners Trust.
Statement by Niccoló Figa-Talamanca, Secretary-General of No Peace Without Justice:
“No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT) are honoured to have had the opportunity to host this meeting with Khalil Al Marzooq and Dr Jasim Husain. The fact that they took time to meet with representatives of leading human rights NGOs as part of their trip to Brussels is a concrete testament to their political vision of the assertion of the rule of law, justice and human rights, at home and abroad.
“While currently in crisis, the commitment of the majority of Bahrainis to reform geared towards a future based on respect for human rights, application of the principle of non-discrimination, accountability for violations and women’s participation in public and political life gives hope for a better future. Dr Husain’s and Mr Marzooq’s presentations about the current situation and prospects for the future underscored quite clearly the need for support and engagement throughout the region, which is essential to bring the country in the right path and will help anchor Bahrain to democracy and rule of law and to restore peace, stability and development.”
