No Peace Without Justice welcomes the release of Mr Fouad Abdelmoumeni, a well-known human rights defender in the Kingdom of Morocco who has contributed significantly to the promotion of justice and democracy in Morocco, who was arrested yesterday โon suspicion of having committed criminal offences punishable by lawโ, as announced this morning by the Public Prosecution at the Casablanca Criminal Court. His return to freedom is a positive step for all those who seek to defend human rights and freedom of expression.
We appreciate the efforts made by all parties that led to this encouraging outcome and hope that the proceedings against Mr Fouad Abdelmoumeni will be discontinued. However, it is essential to continue to support all voices that contribute to open and constructive dialogue within Moroccan society. Freedom of expression and respect for fundamental rights are pillars of a democratic society, and we hope that this release will open the way for reforms to promote these values.
We express our solidarity with Mr Fouad Abdelmoumeni and all human rights defenders in Morocco, and pledge to continue to support an environment where everyone can express their opinion without fear of repression.
