On February 8th 2022, in a landmark vote, Italy made protecting the environment part of its Constitution.
The Parliament approved a new constitutional law stating that Italy must safeguard the environment, biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
Two articles were amended and the protection of ecosystems and animals was added onto the Constitution. The amendments – made “in the interest of future generations” (article 9) – also include the provision that the private industry must not damage health and the environment.
This decision comes at a crucial moment for Italy, which is currently facing its own environmental transition. The country is home to many natural wonders, which are increasingly facing threats as a result of urban development and commercialisation.
No Peace Without Justice applauds the constitutional amendment, an important first step towards better ecological protection and environmental justice in Italy. We hope that the decision will inspire further action and that past and present legislation will be adapted to what is now a fundamental principle of the Italian Republic.
