On 29 May 2008, No Peace Without Justice will contribute to the Workshop on “Young Leaders in Democratic Governance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region”, held at the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) in Venice, addressing the topic “Political pluralism and the role of non-state actors” and illustrating the activities that NPWJ is conducting since 2003 in the MENA Region.
The meeting is jointly organized by the EIUC and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.
The main themes to be discussed during the workshop are constitution building, designing electoral systems, managing elections, political parties, women in politics, post-conflict democratic processes, democracy and development.
Participants in the meeting include, among others, Dr Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies (Egypt) and Mohsen Marzouk, Secretary General of the Arab Democracy Foundation.
The overall objective of the NPWJ MENA Democracy program is to promote democratic values, liberal institutions and open government through the development of political mechanisms of consultation that recognise non-state actors, NGOs and civil society as a legitimate and necessary counterparts for dialogue with State institutions on issues of democratic reform. The program is carried out both at national and regional levels, in cooperation with several governments, non-governmental and institutional partners, aiming to develop effective and durable consultation and dialogue mechanisms on democratic reform.
