No Peace Without Justice monthly e-Newsletter – July issue

Read the e-neswletter in English, Italian

In the July issue of the NPWJ e-newsletter, the main highlights are dedicated to: the commemoration of International Criminal Justice Day, which provides an opportunity to assess the challenges faced by the International Criminal Court over the past year; and to the decision of the Bahraini Lower Criminal Court to sentence prominent human rights defender Nabeel Rajab to two years’ imprisonment in absentia for media interviews he gave in 2015 and 2016, stressing  how this shocking ruling is yet another clear example of the Bahraini authorities’ relentless determination to criminalise free speech and silence any peaceful dissent through judicial harassment and the improper use of judicial and police powers. The July issue also focuses on the ruling handed down by the ICC, determining that South Africa had indeed breached its obligations in failing to arrest President al-Bashir while he was on South African territory in June 2015.

Special attention is also dedicated to two recent events held in Brussels and supported by NPWJ:  a debate conference to highlight the use of torture against the anti-slavery activists of IRA in Mauritania; and a conference convened at the European Parliament to discuss the shape of Post-ISIS Iraq.
