The Group of the Alliance of Liberals And Democrats For Europe and No Peace Without Justice organize a panel discussion on LGBTI rights in Uganda, to be held at the European Parliament (Altiero Spinelli Building, Room A3G-3) on 30 November 2010, from 12:30 to 14:30.
The panel discussion will be preceded by the projection of “The Kuchus of Uganda”, a feature documentary by Swedish director Mathilda Piehl about members of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), a group of activists who risk their lives in order to push for LGBT rights in a country where LGBT people are facing widespread human rights violations, since an Anti Homosexuality Bill was submitted to the Parliament of Uganda one year ago.
“Kuchu” is a Kenyan word meaning “same”, and the word has been adopted by gays and lesbians in Uganda for use in public spaces, especially when they don’t want other people to know what they’re talking about. Awarded the Derek Oyston Campaign for Homosexual Equality Film Award at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, this documentary is an incisive look into one of the world’s most homophobic countries today.
Panelists:
David Kato Kisule, LGBTI Activist
Elio Polizzotto, LGBTI Program Coordinator (NPWJ)
