The 21st session of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) opened today at the World Forum Conference Center in Hague, the Netherlands. The meeting was attended by chairman of the Supreme Court of Mongolia D. Ganzorig, candidate for the election of an ICC judge D. Erdenebalsuren and other members of the Supreme Court of Mongolia at the invitation of President of the court Piotr Hofmański.

Timeline: Two years since the Myanmar military coup

February 1 marks two years since the military, led by army chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, seized control of Myanmar. In the past year, the generals have stepped up their efforts to wipe out all opposition to their rule. The conflict between the military and anti-coup fighters has deepened with violence in nearly all parts of the country. The country’s elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been convicted of a litany of charges in proceedings that took place behind closed doors and faces the rest of her life behind bars. In a decision that shocked the world, the military also hanged four anti-coup activists — the first use of the death penalty in more than 30 years.

“The last hope of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh”: hearings in the Hague

Armenia appealed to the courtwith a demand to apply interim measures and oblige Azerbaijan to open the Lachin corridor – now blocked for fifty-one days – ensuring the free movement of people and vehicles, and restore the electrical supply to Nagorno-Karabakh. Hearings on Armenia’s demands began on January 30. On January 31 there will be a hearing on Azerbaijan’s own claims against Armenia. Azerbaijan demands interim measures to oblige Armenia to “stop mining and transporting mines through the Lachin corridor.” Both hearings are taking place under an application to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Peru: Amnesty International deploys crisis response team to investigate serious human rights violations

After closely monitoring the situation in Peru, Amnesty International has deployed a specialized crisis response team to investigate serious human rights violations and possible crimes under international law committed in the context of the wave of protests that began last December. To date, at least 46 demonstrators and one police officer have died during the repression of protests and nine more people have lost their lives in events linked to the social crisis in the country, according to Peru’s Ombudsman’s Office.
