New York, 11 March 2014

On the occasion of the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), to be held in New York on 10 – 21 March 2014, a high-level parallel event will be convened on 11 March 2014 to discuss measures aimed at fostering the implementation of the resolution calling for a worldwide ban on female genital mutilation (A/RES/67/146), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 20 December 2012.

The meeting, entitled “Ban FGM worldwide: Taking action on UNGA Resolution 67/146” and held under the high patronage of H.E. Mme Chantal Compaore, First Lady of Burkina Faso, is organised by No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ), in partnership with the African Center for Gender of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the Inter-African Committee for Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children, and with the support of the Italian Cooperation.

As explicitly called for by the UNGA Resolution, the international community as well as individual states should take effective action to address and prevent this human rights violation through “all necessary measures, including enacting and enforcing legislation to prohibit FGM and to protect women and girls from this form of violence, and to end impunity”. The meeting will provide an important opportunity to discuss strategies and measures to ensure the full and swift compliance with its principles and provisions and its translation into effective national laws and regional and national programs of action.

Keynote speakers of the meeting, which will be introduced by Alvilda Jablonko, NPWJ’s FGM Program Coordinator, will include: Thokozile Ruzvidzo, Coordinator, African Center for Gender, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa; Mariam Lamizana, President, Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices, Burkina Faso; Imam Djiguiba Cisse, President and Founder of Fondation Djigui – La Grande Esperance and Head of the Grand Mosquee Salaam du Plateau (Abidjan), Cote d’Ivoire; Dr. Morissanda Kouyate, Executive Director, Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices, Guinea; Mariem Baba Sy, Member of Parliament, Mauritania; Khady Koita, President and co-Founder of La Palabre, Senegal/Belgium.

Date and Venue: 11 March 2014 from 6:15 to 7:45 at the Hardin Room of the United Nations Church Center.
