Joint Position Paper on feminicides in Maghreb published by EuroMed Rights

8 Mar, 2025 | Press Releases

On March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, EuroMed Rights publishes a Joint Position Paper on feminicides in Maghreb, which includes No Peace Without Justice among the signatories. Recognizing that femicides know no borders, this position paper is part of a broader feminist mobilization across the Euro-Mediterranean region, where feminicides remain one of the most extreme expressions of patriarchal violence and state failure to protect women’s lives. Across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, feminist movements continue to denounce the systemic impunity that allows these crimes to persist, the complicity of judicial systems, and the lack of comprehensive protection mechanisms for women at risk.

The paper highlights how feminicides are not isolated acts of violence, but the result of structural inequalities, the erosion of civic space, the silencing of feminist voices, and the growing influence of anti-rights movements across the region. It situates the Maghreb’s feminicide phenomenon within the wider Euro-Mediterranean backlash against gender justice and human rights, where authoritarian regimes and conservative forces increasingly weaponize culture, religion, and nationalism to roll back hard-won rights.

The paper calls on governments across the Euro-Mediterranean region to recognize feminicide as a distinct crime, to align to standards of the Istanbul Convention, and to guarantee survivor-centered justice and protection systems. It also urges the European Union and its Member States to place the fight against feminicide and gender-based violence at the heart of its cooperation with Southern Mediterranean countries, ensuring that these efforts contribute meaningfully to protecting women’s rights across the region.
