No Peace Without Justice participates in the 7th General Assembly of the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (IAC) from 27-30 October 2008 in Cairo, Egypt. IAC is an International non-governmental organization, created in February 1984, whose mission is the promotion of gender equality and justice by eliminating harmful traditional practices, to enable African women to participate fully in the social, cultural and political development of their continent.
The purpose of the meeting is to evaluate IAC’s activities and undertake an operational analysis in view of adopting a Plan of Action for the forthcoming years. Delegates will be drawn from IAC’s National Committees and Group Sections and observers invited from the UN system, donor community and diplomats. The General Assembly will serve as a forum for networking, sharing best practices and exchange of ideas on better programming to achieve success.
The commitment of NPWJ against the practice FGM dates to 2002 with the launch of “Stop FGM: an International Campaign to Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation”, in partnership with AIDOS (Italian Association for Women in Development) and seven other NGOs from Africa and the Middle East. The overall objective of the FGM program is to develop a political, legal and social environment that challenges attitudes and behaviours on FGM and promotes its abandonment, in the context of the promotion and protection of women’s and girls’ rights, including through promoting the ratification and implementation of the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. The program builds the strategic capacity of women’s rights advocates and field practitioners working on FGM and promotes legal reform as an effective tool for behavioural change in order to turn the tide of social norms against FGM.
