The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Rwanda, No Peace Without Justice and Collectif des parties civiles pour le Rwanda organised a panel discussion on “The duty to Honour Victims by Preventing & Punishing Genocide”, which was held on 14 December 2017 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The event was organised in commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the signing of the Genocide Convention as well as to mark the third International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.
The purpose of the meeting was to raise awareness and facilitate multi-stakeholder discussion in respect of the crime of genocide, as well to promote a better understanding of past genocides and responses to them as a means of seeking justice and informing better policy and practical solutions to current and future threats.
The meeting which was opened by Michael Moller, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Adama Dieng, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advisor for the Prevention of Genocide (Video) and a representative of the Government of Rwanda. Panelists to the discussion, moderated by Niccolò Figà-Talamanca, Secretary General, No Peace Without Justice, included Dafroza Gauthier, Co-Founder, Collectif des Parties Civiles pour le Rwanda; Prof Mukesh Kapila CBE, Professor of Global Health and Humanitarian Affairs, University of Manchester; Associate Fellow, Geneva Centre for Security Policy; Dr James Smith CBE, Founder and CEO, Aegis Trust; Co-founder of the UK National Holocaust Centre; Linda Melvern, Investigative journalist and author of A Conspiracy to Murder and A People Betrayed; Honorary Professor, Department of International Politics, University of Wales; Dr Andrew Wallis, Researcher, journalist and author of Silent Accomplice; Rodney Dixon QC, Queens Counsel specialising in public international law and international criminal law, Temple Garden Chambers.
