In light of the fourth cycle of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process of United Arab Emirates (UAE), Non c’è Pace Senza Giustizia / No Peace Without Justice has submitted a written contribution outlining urgent concerns on issues that threatened the proper functioning of the UAE justice system and offers recommendations that should be implemented in the country.
The document underlines how the use of the judiciary as a tool of oppression, coupled with massive use of new technologies, leads to a phenomenon also known as rule by law, contrary to rule of law. It also focuses on specific concerns linked to court rulings and proceeding as well as practices linked to law enforcement that should be tackled as they are disrespectful of human rights.
The recommendations, directed towards the authorities of the UAE, will be considered at the 43rd Session of the UPR Working Group to be held in April 2023.
