Child marriage is any marriage (or marriage-like de facto situation) in which at least one of the parties is below 18 years of age.
It is a human rights violation and a grave form of gender-based violence: the number of married girls under 18 is more than five times higher than the number of married boys. According to data by UNICEF-UNFPA, worldwide, 12 million girls are forced into marriage each year.
The available data is scare and dishomogeneous: too many cases still go undetected and lead to more violence and inequality. There is no organic database on the prevalence in Europe or Italy. Italy has no observatory and no national strategy against child marriage. In Italy, 85% of forced marriage victims are women and girls. 38% of forced marriage victims are under 18. Prompt, systematic and multistakeholder action is needed.
